Carbon Chain
Carbon Chain is general-purpose steel chain used for load securement, towing, tie-down, guarding, and a wide range of non-lifting utility applications. Available in Grade 30 (proof coil), Grade 43 (high test), and Grade 70 (transport), carbon chain provides reliable, cost-effective performance for applications that do not involve overhead lifting.
Grade 30 is the most economical general-purpose chain, suitable for light construction, agriculture, marine, and barrier applications. Grade 43 offers higher strength for towing, construction, and container securement. Grade 70 — identified by its distinctive gold chromate finish — is the standard for over-the-road cargo securement and tie-down per DOT/FMCSA regulations.
It is critical to understand that carbon chain is NOT approved for overhead lifting by OSHA, ASME, or NACM — regardless of its rated strength. Carbon steel lacks the alloy composition, controlled elongation, and ductility characteristics required for safe overhead lifting. Carbon chain can fracture suddenly and without warning under overload conditions, unlike alloy chain which elongates visibly before failure. For overhead lifting, always use Grade 80 or Grade 100 alloy chain.
Amick supplies carbon chain from our Pittsburgh facility.
Reliable, economical chain for tie-down and utility — but never for overhead lifting. Carbon chain from Amick in Pittsburgh. Call 412-429-1212.
Type
Carbon steel chain. Grade 30 (proof coil), Grade 43 (high test), and Grade 70 (transport).
Applications
Load securement, cargo tie-down, towing, barrier and guardrail, agricultural, marine, light construction, and general utility applications. Grade 70 is the standard for DOT/FMCSA cargo securement on flatbed and over-the-road transport. Perfect for zinc smelting applications.
Exceptions
Carbon chain is NOT approved for overhead lifting. Using carbon chain for any overhead lifting application is a direct violation of OSHA regulations and creates a serious risk of catastrophic failure. For overhead lifting, use Grade 80 or Grade 100 alloy chain exclusively. Inspect carbon chain for wear, stretch, and damage before each use. Follow DOT/FMCSA regulations when using Grade 70 chain for cargo securement.
