Magnets

Amick supplies electro and permanent lifting magnets for industrial material handling — providing a fast, sling-free method of picking up and moving steel plates, beams, billets, and other ferrous materials. Magnetic lifting eliminates the time spent rigging slings and positioning loads, dramatically increasing throughput in operations that move steel all day.

Electro magnets use an electrical current to generate magnetic force, giving the operator full control over engagement and release. When the power is on, the magnet grips; when the power is off, the load releases. This controllability makes electro magnets ideal for applications requiring precise load placement. However, they require a power supply and include battery backup or mechanical failsafe systems to prevent load drops in the event of a power failure.

Permanent magnets generate their holding force from permanent magnetic material — no electrical power required. They are engaged and disengaged through a mechanical lever or handle that redirects the magnetic field. Permanent magnets offer consistent holding power with no risk of power failure, making them a reliable choice for environments where electrical supply is unavailable or where a simpler, self-contained system is preferred.

Both types fall under ASME B30.20, which addresses lifting magnets as a category of below-the-hook lifting devices. Magnets must be marked with their rated capacity, and operators must be trained on the specific magnet type in use — including the material thickness, surface condition, and air gap limitations that affect holding force.
