Magnetic Particle Inspection

Amick provides Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) — a non-destructive testing (NDT) method that detects surface and near-surface discontinuities in ferromagnetic materials. MPI is one of the most reliable methods for finding cracks, laps, seams, and other defects that could compromise the structural integrity of lifting and rigging equipment.

Our Level II certified NDT technicians perform MPI using both P-70 and Parker Probe equipment, accommodating a variety of part sizes, geometries, and inspection requirements. The process works by magnetizing the component and applying ferromagnetic particles (dry or wet) to the surface — any discontinuity in the material creates a leakage field that attracts the particles, forming a visible indication of the defect's location and size.

MPI is commonly required during periodic inspection of critical lifting components including hooks, shackles, master links, lifting beams, and welded assemblies. It is also used to evaluate components after suspected overloading events or as part of post-repair quality verification.

Amick provides MPI services both at our Pittsburgh facility and on-site at your location — bringing the inspection to your equipment when it's impractical to ship.
