Retractable Lifelines
Retractable Lifelines — also known as Self-Retracting Lifelines (SRLs) — are fall arrest devices that automatically extend and retract a lifeline as the worker moves, maintaining minimal slack at all times. When a fall occurs, an internal braking mechanism locks the lifeline within inches, dramatically limiting free fall distance compared to a standard shock-absorbing lanyard.
By limiting free fall to just inches rather than the 6 feet allowed with a standard lanyard, SRLs reduce the total fall distance, lower the arrest force on the worker's body, and decrease the required clearance below the work surface — making them essential in applications where fall clearance is limited.
SRLs are governed by ANSI/ASSP Z359.14, which classifies self-retracting devices based on their performance characteristics and intended use. Current classifications include SRLs for overhead anchorage, SRL-Ps (personal devices worn on the harness), and SRL-Rs (devices with integral rescue capability).
Amick supplies retractable lifelines and provides inspection and repair services from our Pittsburgh facility. SRLs contain internal mechanical components that require regular inspection and manufacturer-recommended maintenance to ensure reliable braking performance.

Type
Self-retracting lifelines (SRLs) — web and cable lifeline types.
Applications
Any fall arrest application where limiting free fall distance is important — including steel erection, construction, rooftop work, plant maintenance, confined space entry, and work from aerial lifts. Preferred when fall clearance is limited or when a standard 6-foot lanyard would result in the worker striking a lower level before the fall is arrested.
Exceptions
SRLs must be anchored per the manufacturer's instructions — anchorage position (overhead, at D-ring level, or below) determines which class of device is required. Inspect the lifeline, housing, braking indicator, snap hook, and all labels before each use. SRLs must undergo documented periodic inspection per ANSI Z359.14 and the manufacturer's schedule. After any fall arrest event, the SRL must be removed from service and returned to the manufacturer or an authorized service center for inspection before reuse. Do not attempt to service or repair the internal mechanism in the field.
