Safety Harnesses

Full Body Safety Harnesses are the primary body support component of any personal fall arrest system. Unlike the body belts they replaced, harnesses distribute fall arrest forces across the thighs, pelvis, waist, chest, and shoulders — dramatically reducing the risk of injury during a fall arrest event. OSHA has required full body harnesses for fall arrest since 1998.

Harnesses are governed by ANSI/ASSP Z359.11, which establishes requirements for performance, design, marking, testing, inspection, use, maintenance, and removal from service. The standard applies to harnesses designed for users within the capacity range of 130 to 310 lbs.

A properly fitted harness is essential — a loose or improperly adjusted harness can shift during a fall, reducing the effectiveness of force distribution and potentially causing injury. The dorsal D-ring (center of the back, near shoulder level) is the primary attachment point for fall arrest connections. Additional D-rings may be located at the front (sternal), sides (hip), or shoulders for positioning, rescue, or travel restraint functions.

Amick supplies full body harnesses and provides inspection services from our Pittsburgh facility.

Applications

Any workplace where personal fall arrest, positioning, or travel restraint is required — including construction, steel erection, rooftop work, tower climbing, industrial maintenance, confined space work, and aerial lift operations.

Exceptions

Harnesses must be inspected before each use by the worker and undergo documented periodic inspections by a competent person at least annually. Remove from service if the harness shows frayed, cut, or damaged webbing, cracked or deformed hardware, illegible labels, or any signs of a prior fall arrest event. A harness that has arrested a fall must be removed from service and may not be returned to use. Harness fit must be verified each time the harness is donned — all straps snug, buckles engaged, and the dorsal D-ring positioned at center back near shoulder level.
