Manual Hoists
Manual Hoists provide unpowered lifting capability using hand-operated mechanisms — either a hand chain loop (hand chain hoists) or a ratchet lever (lever hoists). These simple, reliable devices deliver lifting and pulling force without electricity or compressed air, making them essential tools for field work, maintenance operations, and any location where powered hoists are unavailable or impractical.
Hand chain hoists are operated by pulling a hand chain loop, which drives a gear train to raise or lower the load chain. They are ideal for stationary overhead lifting on beams, trolleys, and jib cranes. Lever hoists (also called come-alongs or ratchet lever hoists) are operated by pumping a lever handle, providing both lifting and horizontal pulling capability in a compact, portable package.
Both types are governed by ASME B30.16 and require the same inspection and maintenance discipline as powered hoists. Despite their mechanical simplicity, manual hoists contain precision gears, brakes, and load-bearing components that wear over time and require regular inspection.
Amick stocks manual hoists from all major manufacturers and provides repair services from our Pittsburgh facility.

Type
Hand chain hoists and lever hoists (ratchet lever/come-along).
Applications
Field rigging, construction, plant maintenance, equipment installation, utility work, and any location requiring portable, unpowered lifting or pulling. Hand chain hoists are used on overhead beams, trolleys, and temporary rigging points. Lever hoists are used for lifting, pulling, tensioning, and load positioning in virtually any orientation.
Exceptions
Never exceed rated capacity. Inspect load chain, hand chain, hooks, gears, and brake mechanism per ASME B30.16. Do not use a lever hoist as a permanent installation — they are designed for temporary and portable use. Ensure the load chain is properly seated in the chain sprocket before lifting. After repair of load-bearing components, load test before returning to service.
