Wire Rope Thimbles

Wire Rope Thimbles are teardrop-shaped metal inserts placed inside a wire rope eye to protect the rope from crushing, kinking, and abrasion at the point where it wraps around a pin, shackle, or other connection hardware. Without a thimble, the wire rope bears directly against the hardware, creating a concentrated stress point that rapidly fatigues and wears the rope.

Thimbles maintain the eye's shape under load, distribute bearing pressure across a larger surface area, and significantly extend the service life of the wire rope at the connection point. They are available in standard (light-duty) and heavy-duty versions — heavy-duty thimbles have thicker walls and wider grooves for more demanding applications.

Thimble size must match the wire rope diameter. An undersized thimble will not properly support the rope, and an oversized thimble will allow the rope to shift and wear unevenly.

Amick stocks wire rope thimbles from our Pittsburgh facility.

Type

Standard and heavy-duty wire rope thimbles. Available for all standard wire rope diameters.

Applications

Any wire rope termination where the eye wraps around a pin, shackle, hook, or other hardware. Essential for wire rope sling assemblies, crane cable terminations, guy wire connections, and all wire rope eye formations where protection of the rope at the bearing point is needed.

Exceptions

Match thimble size to wire rope diameter. Inspect for cracks, distortion, excessive wear, and proper fit within the wire rope eye. Replace thimbles that are deformed, cracked, or worn to the point where they no longer properly support the wire rope. A thimble that has shifted or become dislodged from the eye indicates the eye formation needs to be re-secured.
