Stainless Steel Cables

Stainless Steel Cables provide corrosion resistance that standard bright or galvanized wire rope cannot match — making them essential for marine, chemical processing, food production, pharmaceutical, and outdoor environments where exposure to moisture, salt, chemicals, or washdown conditions would rapidly degrade carbon steel rope.

Stainless steel cables are typically manufactured from Type 302, 304, or 316 stainless steel, each offering different levels of corrosion resistance and strength. Type 316 provides the highest corrosion resistance, particularly in saltwater and chemical environments, while Type 302/304 offers a balance of corrosion resistance and economy for less aggressive conditions.

It's important to understand that stainless steel cable generally has lower breaking strength than equivalent-diameter carbon steel wire rope. Selection must account for both the corrosion environment and the required working load. Stainless cable is available in a range of constructions including 7x7 and 7x19 for general applications, as well as larger classifications for more demanding uses.

Amick supplies stainless steel cable and fabricates assemblies from our Pittsburgh facility.

Type

Stainless steel wire rope and cable. Types 302, 304, and 316. Constructions including 7x7, 7x19, and larger classifications.

Applications

Marine, offshore, chemical processing, food and beverage production, pharmaceutical, water treatment, architectural, and any environment where corrosion resistance is required. Also used in outdoor installations, washdown areas, and applications requiring a non-magnetic rope.

Exceptions

Stainless steel cable has lower breaking strength than equivalent-diameter carbon steel wire rope — do not substitute stainless for carbon steel without verifying capacity. Different stainless types have different corrosion resistance profiles — select the type appropriate for the specific chemical environment. Inspect for broken wires, corrosion (yes, stainless can corrode under certain conditions), and mechanical damage per standard wire rope inspection criteria.
