No-Touch Load Control: Tag Lines and Sleeves

April 28, 2026
When a suspended load needs to move through close quarters — guided along a path, positioned carefully, or walked into place — direct hand contact puts workers at risk. Tag lines and sleeves solve that problem. Both are soft, flexible tools made from industrial webbing with VELCRO closure systems that wrap around slings, chains, or suspended rigging, giving workers a safe grip point to pull and guide loads without putting hands anywhere near the load or rigging itself.

The core principle is the same for both: wrap around the sling or rigging component, grip the handle or webbing, and pull or guide the load from a safe distance. The difference is form factor.

Tag Lines

Flat, flexible webbing with VELCRO that opens to wrap around a chain sling, web sling, or rope. The VELCRO closure allows the tag line to secure at varying degrees of rigidity depending on the application. Some versions include internal reinforcement (PVC or metal bars) for added stiffness when more control is needed. Once wrapped and secured, the worker pulls the load along the intended path without direct contact.

Sleeves

Cylindrical webbing sleeves with VELCRO running the full length, designed to completely encircle a sling or rigging line. The integrated handle makes gripping intuitive. Standard sleeves rely on the VELCRO wrap for security. Optional carabiner versions add a mechanical backup attachment point — if the VELCRO slips or fails, the carabiner clips to a fixed point, providing redundant safety in high-risk applications.

How They Get Used

Tag lines and sleeves are designed for pulling and guiding suspended loads in controlled, close-quarters environments:

Walking a load — Moving a load along a specific path, preventing drift or unintended swing as it travels from point A to point B.

Directional control — Pulling a load in a precise direction without allowing it to rotate, sway, or move unpredictably.

Tight space guidance — Moving a suspended load through confined areas, around obstructions, or into a specific location where the load needs to go.

Sling grip — Wrapping around the rigging itself — chain slings or synthetic web slings — to give the worker a safe, hands-free grip point while the load is suspended.

Available Configurations

Both tag lines and sleeves are manufactured by Amick in-house and available in multiple configurations:

Tag Lines — Flexible webbing with VELCRO closure, available with optional internal reinforcement for varying degrees of rigidity. Lengths and widths available to match different sling sizes and application requirements.

Standard Sleeves — Cylindrical webbing construction with full-length VELCRO wrap and integrated handle. Designed to completely encircle a sling or rigging line.

Carabiner Sleeves — Same cylindrical construction with the addition of a carabiner attachment point for mechanical backup safety. Used in applications where redundant tie-off security is critical.

When to Reach for a Tag Line or Sleeve

Tag lines and sleeves are the right choice whenever a suspended load needs to be pulled or guided, and direct hand contact with the load or rigging would create a hazard. Whether it's preventing unintended movement, maintaining control through a tight space, or simply giving workers a safe grip point on a sling during a guided lift, these tools keep hands out of the danger zone while maintaining full directional control.

Part of a Larger System

Tag lines and sleeves complement Amick's full line of no-touch tools. Where rigid head type tools like the Shepherd Head, C Head, J Head, and S Head are designed for pushing, pulling, and steering loads at a distance, tag lines and sleeves provide safe grip control for close-quarters load movement. Together, they give operations crews options for every load control scenario — from distant positioning to immediate, hands-off guidance.
